Buvez les Bieres de Garde poster – Vintage Food&Drink Poster – LeClercq

$40.5 $50.22
Buvez les Bieres de Garde poster – Vintage Food&Drink Poster – LeClercq As with many beer, wines and spirits advertising posters, it is the heritage of the local area of the place it was brewed that often forms the basis of early alcohol poster designs. This fabulous Buvez les Bieres de Garde poster is no exception. To promote the traditional farmhouse beer the artist has chosen to portray an extravagantly dressed medieval nobleman savouring the aroma of a large glass of the French speciality beer, before imbibing it. The rosy-cheeked gentleman is dressed in a brown tunic with matching tights and a fantastic pair of bright red shoes on his feet. A gold belt holds his generous belly in position. To denote the character is a man of wealth, the artist LeClercq has offered us a glimpse of the man’s money purse appearing from just under the draping grey sleeves of his blouson. Bières de Garde Bières de Garde, meaning “beers for keeping” in French, is a traditional style of beer that originated in Northern France. The history of Bieres de Garde can be traced back to the 18th century when farmers in the region brewed these beers during the cooler months of the year to sustain them through the warmer seasons. The brewing of Bieres de Garde was heavily influenced by the agricultural and brewing practices of the time. Farmers would brew large batches of beer in the winter months using locally available ingredients, such as barley, wheat, and hops, which were often harvested from their own fields. The beers were then stored in cool cellars or barns to ferment and mature over several months. Bieres de Garde was known for their high alcohol content, ranging from 6% to 8%, which helped to preserve the beer and allowed it to age gracefully. The beers were often brewed with a variety of malted grains, giving them a rich and complex flavour profile with hints of caramel, fruit, and spices. The medieval character on the Garde Beer poster is possibly intended to represent a medieval abbot during a visit to the town’s historic Église Notre-Dame-de-Grace d’Onnaing. The territory of Onnaing has long been part of the property of the Abbey of the Dames de Beaumont located nearby. The beer and brewing website explains that the farmhouse heritage of Bière de Garde is thought to have already been well-established but there is no written historical documentation to support it. However, an 1880 work entitled L’industrie de la Brasserie by L. Figuier, the author describes “Bière de Garde de Lille” as “a highly special brew that was aged in large, wooden barrels for six to eight months before serving.” Although we cannot trace the origins of the Arnould Mochez brand of Bieres de Garde, it is likely it was initially produced sometime between 1904 and 1930. The nobleman or monk is included in the old beer advertising poster to add a faux sense of tradition and heritage to the relatively new brand of beverage. The endearing monk is set against a solid black background, similar to those made popular in advertising posters by the Italian artist and lithographer, Leonetto Cappiello. This poster from around 1930 reads “Buvez les Bières de Garde de la brasserie Arnould Mochez, Onnaingm which translates into English as Drink the beers of the Garde from the Brasserie Arnould Mochez Onnaing. Whilst the antique poster predominantly advertises the beer brand Bières de Garde, the Arnould Mochez Brewery poster is also keen to point out that it also sells other wines and spirits. The Bieres de Garde brand distilled by the Brasserie Arnould Mochez is no longer produced. As France’s rural population declined, the traditional farmhouse breweries almost disappeared and along with them the tradition and diversity of the regional beers were replaced by larger urban ones. However, there has been an upsurge in Frances ‘speciality’ beers and whist the market cannot rival its Belgian neighbours yet, the market is flourishing. Some of France’s better-known brands include Brasserie de Saint-Sylvestre Trois Monts, Brasseurs Duyck Jenlain, Brasserie Castelain Ch’Ti and Brasserie La Choulette Ambrée.
