Champagne Hau & Co. Reims poster. Walter Crane 1894 Original stone lithographic copies of this superbly illustrated Champagne Hau & Co. Reims poster were issued on the streets of Paris in 1894. It was created by the English artist and book illustrator Walter Crane. The poster features a young woman portrayed in the style of Aquarius, servant to the Gods and known as the water bearer. She is shown here carrying a glazed vessel, presumably full of Hau and Co’s white sparkling wine. Gazing straight out at the viewer, her outstretched arm is offering us a large glass of Champagne from Reims. She is dressed in white robes and a long pink dress in the style of traditional Greek statues. The bottom of her dress takes on the look of the roots of a tree, with vines growing up and around the woman’s body. It seems to entwine her as she stands against a background of vines and vine leaves. The wording Champagne Hau & Co Reims is elegantly hand-lettered onto a large shield to the left of the poster. The 1900’s French Champagne Hau Reims Food & Wine Advertisement poster is both beautiful and eye-catching. It stands as a testament to Crane’s skill as an artist and his ability to create visually stunning works of art. Walter Crane is considered to be the most influential and one of the most prolific children’s book creators of his generation. Additionally, Crane designed Art Nouveau textiles and wallpapers that became internationally popular and, as one of its pioneers, contributed substantially to the poster movement in England.
