Champagne Georges Fayet poster Marcel Bloch c1920 This wonderful art deco-styled Champagne Georges Fayet poster offers a light-hearted approach to advertising alcoholic drinks. There are no ‘Drink Responsibly’ messages here. The poster was illustrated by the French painter, lithographer, illustrator and poster artist Marcel Bloch. The artist has created an image that anybody that has ever had a drink can associate with. Bloch’s young blonde flapper girl is looking worse the wear for drink and dare we say it even a bit dishevelled. It’s obviously the end of a long night. The fair-haired socialite is having to focus fairly intently on getting that glass to her lips. The young woman seems mesmerised, as she stares through the bottom of her glass watching as the bubbles float up from the bottom of the glass. With her long white flapper dress and co-ordinating ostrich feather fan the young woman looks like an extra from the Great Gatsby. Set against a bold red background the champagne revelled is standing next to a small table on which an open bottle of Georges Fayet champagne is stood along with two more champagne glasses full of the golden bubbly. The title running along the bottom of the poster reads Champagne Georges Fayet, Epernay. It continues to inform that ‘Maison fondée en 1882’ meaning the champagne house was founded in 1882. The artist Marcel Bloch The artist Marcel Bloch is best known for his neoclassical painting of gallant, romantic and historical scenes of France and its people from the French Revolution to the 1800s. He is also renowned for his portrait paintings of women in the Directoire style which reflected the Revolutionary belief in the values of republican Rome. Whilst he was quite a prolific artist his foray into posters seems be to quite limited. Although there are a few known examples of Marcel Bloch posters being created. At least two of his poster were car-related. The first was produced for the Alcyon company. Alcyon was a manufacturer of bicycles, motorcycles and early cars. The second advertised Samson’s removable tire rims. Bloch, designed most of the posters for Pathé film reissues in the 1930s and 1940s. One is a rare poster for the French release of the RKO film King Kong. A copy of which was placed in an auction in 2019 with an estimated guide price of between $15,000-$20,000.
