Champagne Delbeck Poster Reims – Leonetto Cappiello – 1902 This vintage Champagne poster was created in 1902 by the Italian poster artist Leonetto Cappiello. Although his style changed considerably during his career, this early poster still features his earlier caricature style for this fabulous Champagne Delbeck poster. One of Cappiello’s early trademarks was his caricature portrayals of beautiful women that were some of the most famous Parisian stars of the day. These were sometimes depicted on posters to advertise their own performances at various venues. Others were muses or models used on commercial posters to attract public attention. Stars included the French actress Gabrielle Réjane, the French singer, actress and diseuse Odette Dulac, the singer Louise Balthy. The French soprano Jeanne Granier seems to be a regular model for Cappiello. Not only does Granier appear in many cartoon drawings, she seem to be the model for many of his early poster designs. Among which include his Livorno Stagione Balneare print, the Novita per Signora advertising poster for E.A. Mele & Co. She makes an appearance on Cappiello’s Pur Champagne Damery Epernay affiche and the Grands Chais Medoc print for L Segol et Fils. Other posters include one for the Folies Bergere advertising an evening of Spectacular variety, a print advertising Corset le Furet, one for Amandine Biscuits for H Lalo and sipping from a champagne flute on the famous Champagne de Rochecre poster. The poster features the popular singer opening a bottle of Champagne Delbeck. She is wearing a bright orange dress that complements her hair beautifully. She is depicted standing against a vibrant blue background. In its original form this is a rare and sought-after poster. At the time of listing there were two copies available through online vintage poster stores. The lower priced copy was available for a price of €4 500. Another was to be sold at auction with an estimated guide price of between $4,000-$5,000. There’s no argument from us, if you can find an original copy and can afford to buy it, you’re on to a winner.
