The Beatles Live at the Assembly Hall Mold poster 24 January 1963 This is a reproduction poster print of an exceedingly rare poster advertising The Beatles one and only appearance at the Assembly Hall in the Flintshire town of Mold in North Wales. This is a reproduction of a Beatles poster dating from the Winter 1963 UK tour. The original is a one-of-a-kind poster. It is hand-painted black on both sides, with white gloss lettering. It reads Live at The Assembly Hall, Mold. The Beatles. Thursday 24th jan 1963. 8pm. The original poster measures 22″ x 33″. Before making their way to one of their few Welsh shows, the fab four made a personal appearance at Brian Epstein’s NEMS record store in Liverpool where they signed copies of the group’s newly released, second single Please Please Me. They also performed a short acoustic set. Once in the busy market town, The Beatles gave an interview to journalist David Sandison of the local newspaper, Wrexham Leader. At two hours long, the interview was the longest by the band to date. It was originally published on 29 January but was repeated several times over the next few months. The Beatles concert at the Assembly Hall Mold The band had been booked in October 1962 by Mold’s urban district council for a fee of £50 for a two hour show. Although the fee was much higher than the usual £8-£10 offered to pop groups in Mold at the time, The Beatles were at this time commanding up to £700 per show. The Beatles were reluctant to honour the commitment, but manager Brian Epstein insisted they perform. Two hundred fans packed the Assembly Hall in Mold to see the Fab Four. The Cavern Club’s DJ Bob Wooler travelled down to compère the night. The evening got underway with the local group Dave Roman and The Chariots. One they had finished, according to the Sandison interview “The minute Paul and John came out of the door to the stage, the place was filled with screams and hundreds of girls clamoured forward. The screams were carried on through the hour they were on stage”. There is no surviving setlist from the evenings performance. The closest available set list is for the bands Sheffield show on 12 February 1963. The songs for that show were a mixture of original songs and covers that had become staples of their performances; I Saw Her Standing There, Sweet Little Sixteen, Chains, Beautiful Dreamer, Misery, Hey Good Lookin’, Love Me Do, Baby It’s You, Three Cool Cats, Please, Please Me, Interval/break, Some Other Guy, Ask Me Why, Roll Over Beethoven, A Taste of Honey, Boys, eep Your Hands Off My Baby, Do You Want To Know A Secret, From Me To You, Please Please Me, Long Tall Sally. The Assembly Hall, Mold performance is likely to have been very similar. According to the Beatle Bible website, after the concert George Harrison went to see his aunt in nearby Broughton, while the other three Beatles went to The Talbot pub in Holywell, where the landlady made them sandwiches. How much an original The Beatles Assembly Hall Mold poster worth? The original Beatles Live at the Assembly Hall, Mold poster measured 33″ x 23.5″ . According to the Glass Onion website the scarce, original hand-painted poster was found amongst a deceased ladies possessions in the attic of her flat above the old Co-op in Mold. The lady used to work in the Co-op and was known to have attended the Beatles concert in ’63. Only a handful of these have emerged over the years. With one selling in 2013 for over $12,000.
