The artwork was produced to promote the ‘Primera Corrida de Toros de la Temporada’ or First bullfight of the season’ in 1935. The bullfighting event was held at the famous Plaza Toros Monumental in Barcelona on 10 March 1935. The poster was originally printed by the renowned Ortega Lithographic printers based in Valencia. Ortega were responsible for thousands of Spanish sports, travel and advertising posters. The Plaza de Toros Monumental de Barcelona is a bullring in the city of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Often known simply as La Monumental, Barcelona’s famous Bullring was built featuring an exotic neo-Mudéjar and Byzantine façade, and embellished with Iberian blue-and-white tiles. The bullring was the largest in Barcelona. The arena could seat 20,000, plus another 5,000 standing. Due to public pressure the Parliament of Catalonia passed a law banning bullfighting events on 28 July 2010 that came into force in 2012. The last Catalonian bullfight was held there in 201. The historic venue has been repurposed as both a museum to Spanish bullfighting and as a popular concert venue. The bullfighting ban was overturned in 2016. However, no further bullfights had taken place as of July 2020. Victoriano Roger Valenci II Victoriano Roger Serrano , better known as “Valencia II”, was a famous Spanish bullfighter. He was born in Madrid on 18 December 1898 and began his bullfighting career in the Madrid , where he was a monosabio for eight years before taking up bullfighting. Valencia II’s first bullfight took place at Vista Alegre with with Francisco Torres and Juan Luis de la Rosa in 1916. Between 1919 and 1921, Valencia II became very popular with the Madrid public.His performances were highly admired for his speedwells and half-speedwell and for his efficiency on the muleta. He was very skilled with the sword and his thrusts were precise. He often receiving standing ovations from the public. The matador went on to maintain a very successful bullfighting career. In 1929 his career suffered a setback following some serious injuries. In that year, he performed in Spain and Mexico 40 times . However, over the next couple of years Valancia II fell out of favour, was no longer in demand and retired in 1931. According to Wikipedia, Lalanda is considered one of the main figures of what bullfighting history has called the Silver Age of bullfighting and one of the greatest matadors of his time. In his book ‘In the Death of the Afternoon’ writer Ernest Hemingway describes Marcial Lalanda as a “complete and scientific matador” and “the best there is in Spain”.
