In the late 1920s and early 1930s, there was a considerable vogue for women’s motorsport events in Paris, and women in motoring generally. It seems to have started with Concours d’Elegance, then informal rallies, sometimes attached to hot-air balloon races, and then bigger organised events. There was a regular Paris to Cannes rally. As the artist Jean Don shows in this poster, what better way to spend part of the winter than driving around the sunny French countryside in your automobile. The Jean Don, World Rally to Cannes poster offers an age of innocence from a bygone era. Two cars taking part in the rally are side by side, but there are no signs of competition, just a friendly wave between contestants. A time when driving your new car was such a joy that you ferried your butler around in the back of the car, outside and open to the weather of course!, rather than have him chauffeur you.
