1923 Klausenrennen poster – Course Internationale du Klausen 1923 poster – Anton Trieb This dynamic motor racing poster was created to promote the forthcoming 1923 Klausenrennen event. The 1923 edition of the race was only the second time the race had been held at the Klausen Pass. Following the success of the inaugural race in 1922, the 1923 Klausenrennen poster was created in various languages to appeal to motorsport fans across Europe. This listing features our superb reproduction of the French language version of the poster which reads: Course Internationale du Klausen. Glaris-Uri.29 Juillet 1923. Trieb’s poster’s image depicts a car winding its way up the Klausenstrasse between the cantons of Uri and Glarus. The car is shown speeding around one of the course’s many tight bends. It is proudly displaying the Swiss national flag on its bonnet. The dark sports car is almost silhouetted against a bright blue sky creating a dramatic and dynamic scene. The 1923 Klausenrennen The 1922 Klausen Hill Climb race had been a national affair. It had been organised by the Zurich branch of the Automobile Club of Switzerland (ACS). It was a huge success. The following year, the second Klauenrennen was even bigger. It was held on July 29, 1923. This time the organisers had opened the race up to International drivers as well. The turnout was incredible. The event was attended by some 30,000 spectators, 3,000 visitor cars, and 600 motorcycles. Ninety cars reported for the start of the race. They were divided into touring cars and sports car categories. The 1923 Klausenrennen was won by the Austrian driver Hermann Rützler in a 4.5-litre 6-cylinder-OHC Steyr. The International Klausen Race For over a decade, between 1922 and 1934, the Klausen hill climb was the best-known mountain race in Europe. The famous 21.5 kilometer course, was a long gravel road that stretched from Linthal to the Klausen Pass. The dangerous track with its 136 curves, 56 of which were hairpins and a difference in altitude of 1237 meters, was also Europe’s most difficult race. It was classed as THE International Hill Climb event of Switzerland attracting the best car racing drivers of the era. Although the poster doesn’t show it, the best motorcycle riders also attended. A glance through the decade of winners shows that a high calibre of racing drivers entered the competition. The drivers include Rudolf Caracciola, Otto Merz, Louis Chiron, and Hans Stuck would make the first place podium. The cars were also top quality. Manufacturers including Mercedes Benz, Bugatti, and Austro Daimler entering their vehicles. Within a short period, the Klausenrennen gained a superb reputation. So much so that the Klausenrennen was one of the 10 races to form the first European Hillclimb Championship in 1930. It is reported that during the 1923 Klausen race cars were already getting up to speeds of 200km per hour over the Urnerboden. The continued development in size and performance of the latest Grand Prix cars brought about the end of racing on the Klausen Pass. It simply became too dangerous to continue. The last Klaussenrennen took place in 1934. How much is an original 1923 Klausenrennen poster worth? Between 1922 and 1934, the prestigious Klaussen race was held on ten occasions. As far as we can ascertain, if a poster was created for the inaugural national Klausen race, there isn’t a surviving copy. However, original copies of Klausen posters exist for most of the following years. The interest in collecting the original posters has increased, especially since the introduction of the Klausen race memorial. The Klausen race memorial was introduced to commemorate the historic early automobile races on the Klausen Pass. The memorial races have been held intermittently since 1993, with additional memorial events following in 1998, 2002, 2006, and 2013. 2022 marked the 100th anniversary of the Swiss Hill Climb race. Diavolo Motor Classic (DMC) association organised a memorial on August 6, 2022, to mark the legendary Klausen race. Sadly, the event is not a race but a national vintage car exhibition on the Urnerboden. This relatively recent activity has helped to raise added interest in those vintage Swiss motor racing posters. It’s had the effect of raising prices and making the originals harder and harder to find. Original lithographic copies of this wonderful print, now command prices in excess of £2,200. There’s no argument from us, if you can find an original copy and can afford to buy it, you’re on to a winner. There’s nothing like owning an original vintage poster and they often make a great investment. Chances are in just a few years you’ll be able to sell it for more than you paid for it. Unfortunately, for most of us, an investment, even at the entry-level prices of the collectible poster isn’t even close to being a possibility. This is where our stunning high-quality reproductions come into their own. They cost a fraction of an original and look absolutely fantastic when they’re framed and hung on your living room wall.
