On this day, the Island’s legislature, known as Tynwald, gathers to announce the ‘Tynwald Day Address,’ a speech outlining the government’s plans and priorities for the coming year. This address is a significant event, sparking public discussions and setting the tone for the island’s political landscape. The meeting takes place at Tynwald Hill, which is located on the grounds of The Royal Chapel of St John the Baptist. The four-tiered hill is a central focus of Uptton’s Isle of Man BR poster. and a signal of the island’s independence as a self-governing crown dependency. The hill, which measures around 12 feet high, is thought to be made from piles of stones bonded together with soil from all of the Island’s 17 ancient parishes. It is believed that the open-air ceremony was established by Norse Viking settlers over a thousand years ago with the hill thought to have been built in the 13th century, making it the oldest continuous parliament in the world. Tynwald was important as laws passed were read out and this was the only way to let the common people know what the law was. Uptton’s Isle of Man BR poster depicts the ancient tradition. In front of a large crowd of Manx locals and tourists members of the army and navy flank the pathway between the St John the Baptist church and Tynwald Hill.  Having attended the service at St John’s church, a procession including members of the armed forces, clergymen, magistrates, and local dignatories, walk the pathway to Tynwald Hill. At the head of the procession is the sword bearer, Lieutenant General, and Lord Bishop followed by the Legislative Council and Members of the House of Keys climbing the tiers of the hill. Two chairs placed on the top tier sit beneath the Manx flag, composed of three armoured legs with golden spurs, upon a red background. The high-backed armchairs are set aside for the Lord Lieutenant and Bishop, with the Legislative Council grouped around them. The Members of the House of Keys are in the middle tier. The title and brief summary of all the laws passed are read out. There is time for locals to present petitions and public officials are sworn in before the procession returns to the church. The scene is completed with the rolling green hills of the Isle of Man, like an emerald tapestry stretching towards the horizon. In the distance, the island’s crown jewel, Snaefell, pierces the sky. Its peak, a majestic 2,037 feet tall, might be dusted with snow even in summer.
