Engelberg Switzerland Poster – Martin Peikert – 1952 Engelberg is a small, picturesque town nestled in the breathtaking landscape in the heart of the Swiss Alps. The town offers stunning views of snow-capped peaks and lush mountain valleys and it is a popular destination for both hiking in the summer and skiing throughout the winter. Engelberg is home to some of the best ski resorts in Switzerland. The original version of this reproduction vintage Engelberg poster was created in the 1950s by the renowned poster artist Martin Peikert for the Swiss Travel Bureau. It features a scene that perfectly captures the beauty of the Swiss landscape and features two of the region’s most prominent tourist attractions. In the foreground of the poster is the impressive snow-covered gateway to Engelberg Abbey. The Benedictine Monastery was founded in 1120 The abbey soon became a popular destination for pilgrims, and it flourished for centuries. The monastery began to decline in the late 1500s, and by the early 1800s, it had fallen into ruins. In 1842, the monk Eugen Blume revived the Abbey, and it has since been restored to its former glory. Today, the Abbey is home to a small community of monks, who continue to live a life of prayer and contemplation. The Engelberg Abbey is also a popular tourist destination, and visitors can tour the well-preserved buildings and grounds. The mountain Peikert has captured viewed through the open archway on the vintage Engelberg poster is Hahnen. The Hahnen is a mountain of the Urner Alps in the Swiss canton of Obwalden. Standing at 2,606 meters tall the mountain towers over the tourist resort of Engelberg. Martin Peikert – The artist behind the Engelberg Travel Poster The highly respected Swiss painter and poster artist Martin Peikert is the artist behind this fabulous MOB, Montreux Bernese Oberland skiing poster. Peikert is well known for the realism and precision of his wonderful poster illustrations. He created dozens of travel posters and skiing posters for ski resorts across the Alps. Some of his best-known and most popular posters include his Gstaad poster featuring a couple on a ski lift heading towards ‘the moon’. His poster advertising St Moritz with a cable car heading towards the snow-covered mountain peak. For many of his posters, Peikert used his first wife Henriette as his muse and model. One example is his Les Diablerets poster featuring a skier being pulled up a ski slope with a sprite of her shoulders. One features her travelling to a ski resort on the roof of the MOB Railway and another MOB Railway poster shows her asleep on the roof of a small Swiss chalet. One of his best in my opinion is his iconic Champery ski poster of a woman relaxing in the snow.     Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears, or marks that were part of the original poster master.
