Vichy vintage travel poster – Vichy la reine des villes d’eaux poster – Roger Soubie – 1928 This wonderful 1920s Vichy vintage travel poster will also appeal to golfers across the globe. This fabulous image was created by the poster artist Roger Soubie in 1928. Although there is no confirmation on the poster, it was most likely published by one of the French Railway companies or State Railway that Soubie regularly produced poster designs for. In the 1920s, rail companies were operating during a period of intense competition for passenger traffic, and Soubie’s vibrant, dynamic posters played a key role in attracting travellers. Soubie’s railway posters played a significant role in shaping the public’s perception of train travel in France during the interwar period. His bold colors, dynamic compositions, and evocative imagery captured the romance and adventure of exploring new destinations by train. Roger Soubie transports us to the clubhouse on the Golf du Sporting Club de Vichy golf course. When the course first opened in 1908, it was one of the very first golf courses in France. The nine-hole course, renowned for its extraordinary beauty, lush fairways, and real botanical wonder was designed by Arnaud Massy, a famous French champion and winner of the British Open. The club attracted royalty, aristocracy, celebrities, and wealthy socialites from across Europe and beyond. Imagine dapper gentlemen in plus fours and cloche-wearing ladies swinging hickory clubs alongside tennis champions, opera singers, and even political figures. The clubhouse we are standing next to was built by the architect Gustave Simon, architect of the Compagnie fermière. The impressive view from our vantage point takes in a view across the tree-lined banks of Lake Allier with the arched Pont de Bellerive spanning the river. Soubie continues the view out to the purple hills of the Massif Central mountain range which form a majestic backdrop of this wonderful Vichy vintage travel poster. In the Vichy vintage travel poster, Soubie has focussed on the golfing scene around the clubhouse. A couple of cheerful, fashionably dressed women in long dresses and cloche hats standing chatting about the round they have just completed, comparing shots. Behind them, a man and woman are warming up on the practice green while they wait to tee off. They are waiting for the four-ball to move from hole one they are playing. The only text on the poster appears within a black border surrounding the image. The text reads Vichy, La Reine des Villes d’Eaux… the Queen of the Spa Towns. Although the 1920s were the club’s golden age, the Sporting Club de Vichy Golf Club continues to thrive today. It remains a prestigious destination for golfers and a testament to the enduring allure of a bygone era, where sport, leisure, and social elegance intertwined seamlessly. Original copies of this superb Vichy golf poster were printed by the Parisian lithographic printers Lucien Serre & Cie. demand an auction starting price of over £4,000.
