Bermuda Travel Poster – Golfing in Bermuda – Lemen – c1950 This vintage Bermuda Travel Poster was created by the poster artist Frank Lemen. It was It was one of a series of Bermuda travel posters, published by the Bermuda Tourist Board in the 1950s to highlight the natural beauty of Bermuda and the attractions the island has to offer. The artist places us on the bank of a golf course where the view from our elevated position presents us with the edge of a pink villa, its windows covered by louver blinds to protect the rooms from the hot sun. A bicycle, a popular means of transport on the island, leans against the building almost hidden by the villa’s beautiful garden which is brimming with local flora. Made up of deep red bougainvillea, pink hibiscus, pale magnolias, and yellow Bermuda buttercups, the flowers mingle with green palms and grasses. We can almost smell the fragrance of the flowers and feel the warm sun on our skin. From our vantage point, our attention is drawn to a small group of people playing golf on the green before us. The foursome is playing the third hole, most likely, on the 18-hole golf course of the Mid Ocean Club in Tucker’s Town, Bermuda. The two couples dressed in colourful golfing attire including the obligatory Bermuda shorts are enjoying a four-ball… the men versus the women. Three of the players have completed the hole and are waiting for the last player to putt his ball. The caddy is readied to remove the red flag if he makes the long putt. While the focus is on the game of golf, we get a chance to take in the rest of the scene. To the right of the green, there is another caddy, a young boy who is standing next to a bench, keeping an eye on two sets of golf clubs. A long stretch of pink sand dissects the undulating green from the vast expanse of aqua-coloured North Atlantic Ocean shimmers in the sunlight. At the water’s edge, we see a couple, possibly a woman and her child paddling in the white foam at the water’s edge, while the man does some sea fishing. You can almost hear the gentle lapping of waves and the cries of seagulls. The fabulous artwork created by the artist of the family enjoying their time together evokes a sense of peace and tranquility. It’s a wholesome, yet captivating scene, perfect for 1950s America.
