Winter Sports in Switzerland Patheplay Film Poster This poster was produced by the Pathé film company to promote a documentary titled Winter Sports in Switzerland. Patheplay. The poster features the image of a young luge athlete in his best winter outfit hurtling down the bobsleigh course head first. Pathé was founded in 1896 by four brothers: Charles, Émile, Théophile, and Jacques Pathé. The company started out in Paris and quickly became a major player in the film equipment and production world. By the early 1900s, Pathé was the largest film production company in the world. It produced a wide variety of films, including newsreels, comedies, and dramas. In addition to films, the company also produced phonograph records. Pathé’s success continued throughout the early 20th century. In 1902, Pathé set up production facilities and a chain of movie theatres in London and by 1909, they had built more than 200 movie theatres in France and Belgium. Just a year later they had facilities in Madrid, Moscow, Rome, New York City, Australia, and Japan! Before the outbreak of world war one, Pathé dominated Europe’s market in motion picture cameras and projectors.
