Air France Mexique Poster – Mexico Travel Poster – Guy Georget In the early 1960s, Air France, the visionary airline company committed to opening up the world to travellers, sought a series of posters to promote both new and existing flight destinations. They chose Guy Georget, an artist they had collaborated with many times. Georget embarked on a creative journey to produce a captivating series of posters encouraging adventurers to explore the diverse wonders offered by Air France’s extensive list of destinations. A list that not only included this fabulous Air France Mexique poster but many others for countries including Britain, Greece, Spain, the Near East, India, Italy, and the French airline’s home country. Georget’s creative journey produced a captivating series of posters. Each vibrant, colourful poster features cultural buildings, well-known landmarks, or indigenous fauna each accompanied by a stylized rendition of the country’s quintessential character. The posters are usually set on a sky blue background with the cultural references treated in a fairly conventional manner. In juxtaposition the ‘local characters’ are the main focus of each design and are treated in flat bold colours, and painted in a manner that suggests the image is made up from bits of ripped paper to create a collage. The Air France Mexico poster on this listing portrays a vividly attired Mexican musician donning a purple tunic, a vibrant yellow sombrero, and a green and red striped poncho. The man sits beside a cactus tree beneath the sheltering shade of a sprawling palm tree frond as he strums some tunes on his Spanish guitar. This vintage Mexico poster is a testament to his artistic evolution. Influenced by Picasso and Braque and flirting with the principles of cubism. Georget’s masterful use of a white outline surrounding the central character and the palm leaf gives the impression of a collage, infusing the artwork with a vibrant and almost three-dimensional quality. The result is a radiant and alluring image, one that conjures the sun-drenched allure, rich folklore, and exotic charm of Mexico. The artworks were not mere promotional tools but vibrant invitations, encouraging adventurers to explore the diverse wonders offered by Air France’s extensive list of destinations. In good condition, original copies Guy Georget’s superb Air France poster promoting air travel to Mexico sells for in excess of £1000 which seems to be a reasonable price for a vintage travel poster that s now over seventy years old.
