Fliegt in die Bäder poster – Deutsche Luft Hansa Poster – Hans Vogel Just like the woman beckoning to the passengers on the airplane flying overhead, the Deutsche Luft Hansa airline used this Fliegt in die Bäder poster, to beckon the German public to enjoy the German seaside resorts on, what was known as the Bathing Route. This captivating vintage Luft Hansa poster, one of the earliest treasures from the airline’s rich history, whispers of a bygone era when air travel was a thrilling novelty. Founded just twelve months before this poster graced the world, Deutsche Luft Hansa was already dreaming of connecting people and places through the magic of flight. Deutsche Luft Hansa’s Bäder or Bathing Routes: Taking to the Skies for Sun and Sea The original Deutsche Luft Hansa, operating from 1926 to 1945, wasn’t just about transporting passengers between major cities. It also catered to the leisure market with its Bäder, or Bathing Routes. These air routes connected inland cities in Germany with popular seaside resorts along the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts. Destinations included Sylt, Norderney, Borkum, Juist, Wangerooge, Cuxhaven, Büsum, St. Peter-Ording,Timmendorfer Strand, Scharbeutz, Travemünde, Grömitz, Kühlungsborn, Binz, and Rügen The Fliegt in die Bäder poster The vintage Fliegt in die Bäder poster was designed to appeal to the sense of luxury and adventure that flying represented in the 1920s. It was designed by Hans Vogel, a German artist who was known for his work in advertising and illustration, and especially for his posters for the fledgling Luft Hansa airline.. Vogel was a master of using simple, effective imagery to communicate a message. In this scene, the artist has transported us to one of Germany’s beautiful beaches where we find two young ladies in black swimsuits. Lying on the golden sand, they are soaking up the sun’s warm rays. The gentle sound of the waves lapping against the golden sand is as mesmerising as it is relaxing. Eyes closed, both the sunbathers are drifting into that dream-like state between sleep and wakefulness. Suddenly, the peace succumbs to the hum of an approaching plane flying low in the clear blue sky. As the plane gets closer and the hum gets louder, one of the sun-worshippers nonchalantly raises her head. Continuing to bask in the golden sun, she only fleetingly glances at the commotion, from beneath her parasol. The other can’t resist. She leaps to her feet, excitement bubbling over. With a playful come-hither wave, she attempts to entice the passengers aboard to join their blissful beach haven. This vintage Fliegt in die Bäder poster was produced so early in the company’s timeline it doesn’t even feature its famous ‘flying crane’ logo. Instead, the company name Deutsche Luft Hansa AG sits at the foot of the poster. The rest of the text is simple and direct, encouraging viewers to experience the thrill of flying to the beach. Set against the clear blue sky the poster boldy shouts Fliegt in die Bäder! meaning Fly into the Bathing Resorts! Vogel’s playful and inviting Fliegt in die Bäder poster was a success for Deutsche Luft Hansa, and it helped to promote the airline’s new “bathing routes” to popular beach destinations in Germany. From Sylt to Rügen, Deutsche Luft Hansa offered the German public access to the most beautiful beaches, glorious sunbathing, refreshing swims, enchanting landscapes, and warm hospitality at destinations around the German coast. The Fliegt in die Bäder poster is still considered a classic of aviation advertising.
